When Arizona schools start in 2026-27, district by district

Arizona districts opened the 2026-27 year between July 15 and August 10. Here are the verified first days for major districts, why the calendar runs early, and what to do if you arrive in summer.

Arizona schools start earlier than most of the country. For 2026-27, district first days ran from July 15 to August 10, and most years end in mid-to-late May. If you are arriving from a state where school starts after Labor Day, the year here may already be three to six weeks old by the time you expect it to begin.

Verified first days, 2026-27

Each district sets its own calendar. These dates were checked against the district's calendar or an official announcement on 11 October 2026; districts whose dates could be confirmed only from third-party calendar sites are left off.

Charter schools set their own calendars and generally fall in the same window. Several large districts, including Phoenix Union, Peoria and Tempe Union, are not in the table because their 2026-27 dates could be found only on third-party calendar sites; check the district's own site.

Why the calendar runs early

Arizona has no state law setting a start date; each governing board adopts its own calendar. The reasons officials give are consistent. Arizona School Administrators' executive director told the Arizona Agenda in 2021 that calendars shifted earlier in the 1990s as test pressure grew, since an early start "allows a full semester of work before the winter break" and more teaching days before spring state tests, with most districts fitting the required instructional hours into 180 days that end by Memorial Day. Shorter summers to limit learning loss are the other stated reason; a Queen Creek principal described to ABC15 a July start with two-week breaks in fall, winter and spring. Heat is often mentioned by parents and reporters, but it is rarely the stated reason in a board decision.

If you arrive in summer

  1. Check the first day for the district you are moving into, not the region; neighbouring districts can be three weeks apart.
  2. Enroll before the first day if you can. Your resident district school must enroll your child at any time, but class lists and bus routes are set in the weeks before school starts.
  3. If you arrive after the first day, nothing is lost: see mid-year enrollment and enroll this week.
  4. Gather the enrollment documents now; the immunization record is the one that can keep a child out of class.

Frequently asked questions

When does school start in Arizona?

Between mid-July and the second week of August, depending on the district. For 2026-27, Chandler started July 15 and Scottsdale August 10.

Does Arizona have a statewide first day of school?

No. Each district and charter governing board sets its own calendar.

When does the Arizona school year end?

Mid-to-late May in most districts. Scottsdale's 2026-27 last day is May 27, 2027; Chandler's is May 20, 2027.

Can my child start after the first day?

Yes. A resident district school must enroll your child at any time during the year, and schools take open-enrollment students as capacity allows.

Why do Arizona schools start so early?

Districts cite a full semester before winter break, more teaching days before spring testing, a shorter summer, and ending by Memorial Day. There is no state rule requiring it.
