Which boarding schools exist in Arizona? The complete list (2026-27)

As of October 2026, four schools in Arizona board high-school students in a college-preparatory setting: Bella Vista College Preparatory School, Rancho Solano Preparatory School, Thunderbird Adventist Academy and Verde Valley School. Several other names that still show up in search results have closed or never ran dormitories. This page lists all of them in one place so you can stop searching, and ends with the questions to ask whichever school you call.

The four schools that board high-school students

Costs are the schools' own published 2026-27 figures as of October 2026 and leave out travel, books, activity fees and deposits. Independent notes include Niche's 2027 "Best Boarding High Schools in Arizona" grades and ranks as read on 11 October 2026; schools cannot edit that column. Ask each school for its current fee sheet before you budget.

Bella Vista College Preparatory School is an independent school on North 40th Street in Phoenix for grades 7 to 12. Its boarding population is built around a basketball programme that competes in the Nike EYBL Scholastic conference, and international students can choose school housing or a shared-room home stay. It suits a student who wants competitive basketball alongside a college-preparatory timetable.

Rancho Solano Preparatory School is an independent K-12 school in Scottsdale that boards students in grades 6 to 12 in off-campus houses with residential staff on duty around the clock. It offers the IB Diploma Programme and reports students from more than 28 countries across its day and boarding groups. Thunderbird Adventist Academy is a Seventh-day Adventist high school in Scottsdale for grades 9 to 12 with day students and dormitory students, who choose a five-day or a full-time plan. Schools Niche lists as boarding that do not run dormitories

Niche's Arizona boarding list includes some schools that do not operate a dormitory. If one of these was on your list, call the school before planning around boarding.

  • Arizona Lutheran Academy, Phoenix (grades 9-12; Niche A-, #4 on the 2027 boarding list). Its international students live with host families. No dormitory was found as of October 2026.
  • Green Fields School, Tucson (Niche A+, unranked). The school stopped boarding in the 1960s, closed in bankruptcy in July 2019 and reopened under Accelerated Schools; its website read "under construction" in October 2026. Niche still labels it a boarding school.
  • Phoenix Country Day School, Paradise Valley. A day school; the National Association of Independent Schools directory lists no boarding.

Closed or no longer boarding

These names still appear in directories and old articles. None takes students as of October 2026.

  • The Orme School, Mayer: closed at the end of the 2024-25 school year; the board announced the closure on 17 January 2025.
  • Fenster School, Tucson: closed in 2016; the site is now a treatment facility.
  • Judson School, Paradise Valley: closed in 2000 and demolished in 2001.
  • Oak Creek Ranch School, Cornville: closed in 2017.
  • Southwestern Academy, Beaver Creek Ranch campus, Rimrock: now presented as "A4 Ranch at Southwestern Academy", a living-history ranch rented for camps and events, with no grades, enrollment or tuition listed. The tuition on Southwestern's site refers to its San Marino, California campus. We could not confirm that any student boards at Rimrock; ask the school directly if it matters to you.
  • Spring Ridge Academy, Mayer (therapeutic, girls): closed permanently in February 2023.
  • Copper Canyon Academy, Rimrock: closed on 7 April 2014.

Tribal and BIE residential schools

Several schools in northern Arizona run dormitories for the communities they serve. They are Bureau of Indian Education (BIE) schools or church-run academies with a specific mission, not open-enrollment private schools, and this page lists them so the picture is complete rather than as options for most readers.

  • Greyhills Academy High School, Tuba City: a BIE grant school with a dormitory.
  • Many Farms High School, Many Farms: a BIE school with dormitories; Many Farms Community School serves K-8.
  • Rough Rock Community School, Rough Rock: a K-12 grant school with dormitories.
  • Holbrook Indian School, Holbrook: a first-through-twelfth-grade boarding academy operated by the Pacific Union Conference of the Seventh-day Adventist Church for American Indian youth, funded largely by donors.

The Arizona State Schools for the Deaf and the Blind closed its Tucson dormitories at the end of 2025-26, and its new Oro Valley campus has no dormitories.

Therapeutic and residential treatment programs

These are licensed residential treatment or behavioural programs with schooling attached. They are health-care placements chosen with clinicians, insurers and sometimes courts, not school choices, and this page gives names and type only.

  • Sedona Sky Academy, Rimrock: licensed residential treatment center for girls aged 8 to 17 (current operating status partly unverified as of October 2026).
  • In Balance Ranch Academy / Adolescent Recovery, Huachuca City: residential program for boys in grades 9 to 12 with dual-diagnosis needs.
  • Canyon State Academy, Queen Creek: Rite of Passage residential program for males aged 11 to 17.
  • Devereux Arizona, Scottsdale: residential treatment with an on-site school.

Questions to ask any boarding school

  1. Five-day or seven-day? Do boarders stay on weekends, and if not, where do they go?
  2. What does the weekend programme look like? Ask for last month's actual schedule, not the brochure.
  3. What is the supervision ratio in the residence, overnight and on weekends, and who are the adults?
  4. What health services are on site, who is on call overnight, and how far is the nearest hospital?
  5. What is the international mix, and how are domestic and international students housed together?
  6. What happens when a student struggles, academically or emotionally? Who notices, who calls you, and when does a student have to leave?
  7. What is the total cost, including travel home, deposits, books, exam fees, activities and insurance?
  8. When is financial aid decided, and is any left after the priority deadline?
  9. Do you admit students mid-year, and under what conditions? See mid-year enrollment.

Can an ESA or a tax-credit scholarship pay for boarding school?

An Empowerment Scholarship Account (ESA) can pay tuition and fees at a qualified private school, and all four schools above are private. For 2025-26 the Arizona Department of Education's funding chart put the award for a student in grades 1 to 12 without a disability at $7,105 to $10,540 (as of October 2026; no 2026-27 chart had been published). That is a fraction of a boarding bill. The ESA handbook's list of allowed uses covers tuition, fees and required textbooks; room and board does not appear on it, so ask the school how it invoices boarding and check ADE's unallowable list before counting on ESA money for the residential part. Full details are on the ESA page.

Tax-credit scholarships from School Tuition Organizations (STOs) are open to any K-12 private-school student, and a student who moved from out of state meets one of the "switcher" conditions. The corporate low-income program caps awards at $8,300 for grades 9 to 12 (2025-26) and has an income limit. A student cannot hold an ESA and an STO scholarship in the same year (A.R.S. 15-2402(B)(3)). Ask each school which STOs it works with; the fee sheets and aid pages linked in the table are where the schools state this. Each school's own financial aid is separate again.

Frequently asked questions

Is Verde Valley School the only boarding school in Arizona?

No. As of October 2026, four Arizona schools board high-school students in a college-preparatory setting: Bella Vista College Preparatory School in Phoenix, Rancho Solano Preparatory School in Scottsdale, Thunderbird Adventist Academy in Scottsdale and Verde Valley School in Sedona. BIE and church-run residential schools serve particular communities, and therapeutic programs are a separate category.

Can I use an ESA for boarding school?

An ESA can pay tuition and fees at any of the four private schools above, but the 2025-26 award for a student in grades 1 to 12 without a disability was $7,105 to $10,540, far below a boarding bill. Room and board is not on the handbook's list of allowed uses, so ask the school how it invoices the residential part. You cannot combine an ESA with an STO scholarship in the same year.

Is The Orme School still open?

No. The Orme School in Mayer closed at the end of the 2024-25 school year, after its board announced the decision on 17 January 2025.

Which Arizona boarding schools offer the IB Diploma?

Rancho Solano Preparatory School and Verde Valley School both offer the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme as of October 2026. See high school for how IB credits transfer.

Are there boarding schools for middle-school students in Arizona?

Rancho Solano boards students from grade 6, and Bella Vista boards international students in grade 8 as well as high-school students, as of their 2026-27 published information. Thunderbird and Verde Valley School board grades 9 to 12 only.

Can my child start boarding school in the middle of the year?

It depends on the school and on whether a bed is free. Ask each school directly; some admit on a rolling basis after a priority deadline and others do not take mid-year students. See mid-year enrollment.

Why does Niche show more boarding schools than four?

Niche's list includes schools whose international students live with host families, a school that stopped boarding decades ago, and residential treatment programs. The list above is what we could verify from each school's own site in October 2026.
