Tucson schools: districts, charters and private options

Tucson's public schools are organized around one large central district, Tucson Unified, and a ring of mid-sized districts that each cover a part of the metro area. Your address puts you in one of them, and that district's boundary school must enroll your child. Most of the suburban districts actively recruit open enrollment families, so a school in a neighboring district is often a realistic option if it has space.

How Tucson's districts fit together

Unlike Phoenix, nearly every Tucson-area district is unified, meaning one district handles preschool or kindergarten through grade 12. Tucson Unified covers the central city and much of the west and south side. Amphitheater runs north from midtown into Oro Valley. Catalina Foothills takes the foothills north of River Road. Flowing Wells and Marana cover the northwest; Sunnyside the south side; Tanque Verde the far east; Vail the southeast and the town of Vail; Sahuarita the Green Valley corridor to the south.

Every district publishes an attendance boundary map, and several have address-based tools. Every district also runs open enrollment under A.R.S. § 15-816.01 and publishes which grades have space.

Charter schools in the Tucson area

Charter schools are public, free and open to any Arizona resident; most hold a lottery when demand exceeds seats. Fewer of the big Phoenix networks operate here, but several have Tucson campuses. Alphabetically:

The full list is in the State Board for Charter Schools directory.

Private schools

Tucson's private options center on three Catholic high schools, two independent schools and several Christian and Jewish schools. Eight notable ones, alphabetically; tuition is on each school's site, and ESA and tax-credit scholarships can offset it.

Note that Immaculate Heart High School closed in 2023; the Immaculate Heart preschool through grade 8 program in Oro Valley continues (per Tucson.com, 2023). See Private schools in Arizona for how admissions and timelines work.

Online options

Statewide online public schools enroll Tucson students free of charge: Arizona Virtual Academy, Arizona Connections Academy, Primavera Online School and ASU Prep Digital, all K-12. Locally, Vail runs a fully online program and the Vail Innovation Center (online, grades 6-12), Leman has a virtual academy, and Sonoran Schools has a K-8 virtual academy. Practical notes

  • Start dates vary by two weeks. For 2026-27 (per KGUN 9): Vail Pre-K-8 on July 20 and its high schools on July 27; Tanque Verde and Sunnyside on July 30; Sahuarita, Catalina Foothills, Marana and Continental on August 3; Amphitheater on August 5; Flowing Wells and Tucson Unified on August 6. Fall break for most districts ran October 12-16, 2026.
  • Heat. Summer highs are a few degrees below Phoenix but still above 100°F through the first weeks of school. Walking routes need water and shade.
  • Buses. Boundary-school students inside the transport zone ride free. Amphitheater states plainly that it does not provide transportation for open-enrolled students; expect the same elsewhere.
  • Commute. Tucson is smaller than Phoenix and most cross-town drives are under 30 minutes, but I-10 and Oracle Road back up at school start. Foothills and Vail commutes are longer than they look.
  • University ties. The University of Arizona sits inside Tucson Unified; several high schools and charters run dual-enrollment or early-college programs with it and with Pima Community College.

How to find your assigned school

  1. Identify your district by entering your address on AZ School Report Cards, or by checking which district's map contains your street.
  2. Open the district's boundary map or locator from the table above. Sahuarita, Vail, Marana and Tucson Unified have address-based tools; Amphitheater, Catalina Foothills and Tanque Verde publish maps.
  3. Note the assigned elementary, middle and high school. A resident child cannot be turned away from these.
  4. To choose a different school, open the district's open enrollment page, check the capacity list (several districts publish grade-by-grade availability), and apply before you register.
  5. Register through the district's online portal (ParentVUE or PowerSchool), then bring the required documents to the school office.
