Flagstaff and northern Arizona schools: districts, charters and private options
Off tribal lands, northern Arizona's school map is simple: one unified district per town, a charter cluster in Flagstaff and another in the Prescott area, and a short private-school list. Your town sets your district, and in Flagstaff and the Prescott area a boundary map sets your school within it. On the Navajo Nation, Hopi and White Mountain Apache lands, public districts enroll the same way, and federal and tribal schools sit alongside them with their own enrollment. The practical issues up here are winter weather, long bus routes and the distance between towns, not the number of choices.
Flagstaff
Flagstaff Unified School District No. 1 serves the city and surrounding Coconino County communities with 15 schools, K-12. It has an address-based school finder and a separate open enrollment page; Flagstaff families inside the city boundary are assigned by attendance boundary and may apply to other FUSD schools with space.
Flagstaff also has a long-running set of charter schools. Flagstaff Arts and Leadership Academy, a well-known charter middle and high school, announced on its site that it would close after the 2025-26 school year, so it is not an option for 2026-27.
Prescott, Prescott Valley and Chino Valley
Three unified districts sit side by side along SR 69 and SR 89: Prescott Unified (city of Prescott), Humboldt Unified (Prescott Valley and Dewey-Humboldt) and Chino Valley Unified. Each publishes a boundary map. Humboldt states that families can register at any of its schools regardless of address, subject to capacity, and Prescott and Chino Valley have open enrollment pages. The Prescott area also has the region's second charter cluster.
Payson, Show Low and Pinetop-Lakeside, Williams and Page
Each has one unified district and, in most cases, one school per grade band. Open enrollment between them is rarely practical because of distance; the realistic alternatives are the district school, online school, or the charter and private options listed below where they exist.
On the Navajo Nation, Hopi and White Mountain Apache lands
Most of northern Arizona's land is tribal land, and two school systems run there side by side. Public school districts on the Navajo Nation, on the Hopi Reservation's edges and on the White Mountain Apache Reservation are ordinary Arizona districts: they follow the same statutes, run open enrollment and appear on AZ School Report Cards, and you enroll through the district like anywhere else. Alphabetically, as of October 2026:
| District | Schools named on its site | Enrollment page |
|---|---|---|
| Chinle Unified School District No. 24 (Chinle, Many Farms, Tsaile) | Canyon De Chelly and Chinle elementaries, Mesa View Elementary, Many Farms and Tsaile public schools, Chinle Junior High, Chinle High | See the district site (no enrollment page found; use its directory) |
| Ganado Unified School District ("located in the Navajo Nation Tribe in northeastern Arizona", per its site) | See its "Our Schools" page | Registration and immunizations |
| Kayenta Unified School District | ABC Preschool, Debbie Braff Elementary, Baker Middle, Monument Valley High | Registration and immunizations |
| Tuba City Unified School District No. 15 | Tuba City, Tsinaabaas Habitiin and Dzil Libei elementaries, Tuba City Junior High, Tuba City High, Nizhoni Accelerated Academy | Registration and enrollment |
| Whiteriver Unified School District No. 20 (White Mountain Apache Reservation) | Cradleboard, Seven Mile and Whiteriver elementaries, Canyon Day Junior High, Alchesay High | See the district site, which links ParentVUE online-registration instructions |
| Window Rock Unified School District No. 8 (Fort Defiance, Window Rock) | Tséhootsooí Dine Bi'Olta, Tséhootsooí primary, intermediate and middle schools, Window Rock High | Registration and returning students |
Page Unified, in the main table, sits at the Nation's northwestern edge; Winslow and Holbrook are not covered yet.
The second system is federal and tribal. The Bureau of Indian Education operates some schools directly and funds tribally controlled grant schools, several with dormitories, including Greyhills Academy High School in Tuba City and Many Farms High School. Hopi Junior/Senior High School in Keams Canyon, on the Hopi Reservation, is a grant school rather than a state district school (per the federal NCES directory). These schools enroll through their own offices, not through a district, open enrollment or the state charter board; call the school for its application and documents. The BIE directory lists every school with contacts. The Navajo Nation's own Department of Diné Education links a Navajo Nation school directory and federal and state education resources from its home page and is the place to ask which schools serve a given chapter.

Charter schools
Public, free, no boundaries, lottery when full. Alphabetically by area; each link goes to the school's own site.
Flagstaff
- BASIS Flagstaff: K-12.
- Montessori Charter School of Flagstaff: K-8, consolidating all campuses at 850 N. Bonito St. for 2026-27.
- Northland Preparatory Academy: grades 6-12, lottery admission; the site refused my connection when I checked, so confirm details with the school at 928-214-8776.
- Pine Forest School: K-8, public Waldorf principles, plus a preschool.
Prescott area
- BASIS Prescott: K-12.
- La Tierra Community School (Prescott): kindergarten through the middle grades; the site lists K-7 in its header and grades 5-8 in its schedule, so confirm the current top grade.
- Skyview School (Prescott): kindergarten through middle school, multiple-intelligences model.
- Tri-City College Prep High School (Prescott): college-preparatory high school.
- Willow Creek Charter School (Prescott): K-8, described on its site as a tuition-free Arizona public charter school; 2100 Willow Creek Rd.
Prescott Valley and Chino Valley
- Acorn Montessori School (Prescott Valley): Pre-K through grade 2 at its West campus and grades 3-8 at its Main campus, state-funded and free; accepting 2026-27 applications when I checked.
- Franklin Phonetic Primary School (Prescott Valley): charter school at 6116 E. Highway 69 whose posted schedule runs from kindergarten through grade 8; confirm grades and openings with the school.
- Mingus Springs Charter School (Chino Valley): K-8 charter at 3600 N. Sunset Dr., founded 1995; enrolling for 2026-27 when I checked.
Northpoint Expeditionary Learning Academy in Prescott closed at the end of the 2025-26 school year (Daily Courier, May 2026). Mountain Oak School (Prescott, Waldorf-inspired) had a site that returned errors when I checked, and Canyon View Prep (Prescott Valley) and Flagstaff Junior Academy could not be verified; check the State Board for Charter Schools directory before relying on any of them.
Private schools
Five notable schools, alphabetically, each linked to its own site. Tuition is on each site; ESA and tax-credit scholarships can offset it.
- Flagstaff Christian School (Flagstaff): K-12 on three campuses, inter-denominational Christian.
- Northland Christian School (Flagstaff): elementary through high school, ministry of Northland Baptist Church.
- Sacred Heart Catholic School (Prescott): preschool through grade 8, Catholic.
- San Francisco de Asís Catholic School (Flagstaff): preschool through grade 8, Catholic.
- Trinity Christian School (Prescott): K-12, classical Christian, grammar school and upper school on separate campuses.
There is no independent (non-religious) private day school in Flagstaff or Prescott that I could verify, and no private college-preparatory boarding school in this region: The Orme School near Mayer closed at the end of 2024-25 (per its site). The Bureau of Indian Education and tribal grant schools on the Navajo Nation, including Greyhills Academy High School in Tuba City, do board students, but they enroll separately through the BIE school system, not through open enrollment. Families wanting an independent or IB high school should read Private schools in Arizona and Boarding schools in Arizona, which list every option statewide.
Online options
Statewide online public schools are free for Arizona residents: Arizona Virtual Academy, Arizona Connections Academy, Primavera Online School and ASU Prep Digital, all K-12. Locally, Prescott Unified runs PUSD Online Learning and Show Low runs White Mountain Institute/Online; ask each district about its program. In towns with one high school, online courses are one way to add AP or language options; the career and technical districts below are the other. See Online schools in Arizona.
Career and technical education
Each part of the region has a Career and Technical Education District that high-school students join while staying enrolled at their own district, charter or private school. Apply through your high school's counselor or career technician.
- CAVIAT (Coconino County, offices in Flagstaff and Page): its member districts are Flagstaff, Fredonia-Moccasin, Grand Canyon, Page and Williams (ADE's CTED list, July 2025). Central programs take an application on its site; satellite programs are chosen at high-school registration; programs taught with a community college also need college admission. Its 2026-27 priority registration had closed when I checked in October 2026.
- Mountain Institute CTED (Prescott): partners with the Ash Fork, Bagdad, Chino Valley, Humboldt, Mayer, Prescott and Seligman districts, serves grades 10-12 in western Yavapai County, welcomes homeschool, online, charter and private students, and covers the tuition for its dual-enrollment courses at Yavapai College.
- NAVIT (Northern Arizona Vocational Institute of Technology, Snowflake): the White Mountains' CTED, serving 11 host districts its site does not name; apply through your high school's career technician, or by email if you homeschool.
Practical notes
- Winter. Flagstaff, Williams, Show Low and Pinetop-Lakeside get real snow; Prescott and Payson get some. Snow days and two-hour delays are announced by each district (FUSD uses its site and alerts). Keep a plan for delayed starts.
- Buses. Rural routes are long, and some children ride an hour each way. Districts bus boundary students. FUSD lets open-enrolled students ride from a designated pickup point on an existing route to the school, and Prescott says limited transportation may be offered; elsewhere plan to drive. If your child's IEP says transportation is necessary, the receiving district must provide it, up to 30 miles each way (A.R.S. 15-816.01(H)). FUSD's in-district boundary-exception requests are due April 30 for the following year. Blue Ridge requires open-enrollment acceptance before registration.
- Start dates. FUSD: Monday, August 10, 2026 (calendar approved January 13, 2026); Prescott Unified: Thursday, August 6, 2026 (district enrollment page). The others publish theirs on their calendar pages; high-country districts start later than Phoenix. Confirm before you plan.
- Distance between towns. Flagstaff to Prescott is about two hours; Payson, Show Low and Page are each hours from everything else. Enrolling in a neighboring town's district is rarely practical outside the Prescott-Prescott Valley-Chino Valley cluster.
- Altitude. Flagstaff and the White Mountains sit high enough that newly arrived children may tire more easily in the first weeks; PE and sports adjust.
- Documents. The usual Arizona set: certified birth certificate, immunization record, proof of residency, parent ID, any custody papers and a withdrawal form from the last school. Page lists accepted residency documents in detail on its registration page. See Enrollment documents.
How to find your assigned school
- Match your town to its district in the table. In Flagstaff, Prescott and Prescott Valley, your address also sets your school within the district.
- Open the district's school finder or boundary map: FUSD's address-based school finder, Humboldt's boundaries page, or Prescott's boundary map.
- Note the assigned school. A resident child cannot be turned away.
- To choose another school in the district, apply through the district's open enrollment page before registering; Humboldt says to call the school first to check availability.
- Register online (ParentVUE for FUSD, Humboldt, Chino Valley and Blue Ridge; Infinite Campus for Payson; in person for Page), then bring the documents to the school office.

Frequently asked questions
Which district is Flagstaff in?
Flagstaff Unified School District No. 1, which runs 15 schools K-12. Use its address-based school finder to see your assigned school.
Is Prescott Valley in the Prescott school district?
No. Prescott Valley and Dewey-Humboldt are in Humboldt Unified School District. The city of Prescott is in Prescott Unified. Both accept open enrollment from each other's residents when space allows.
Can I enroll in a Prescott school if I live in Prescott Valley?
Yes, through open enrollment if the grade has space, and Humboldt says the reverse is true as well. You provide transportation.
Is Flagstaff Arts and Leadership Academy still open?
No. Its site states that the school closed after the 2025-26 school year, with the last day of classes on May 21, 2026.
What happens on snow days?
Each district announces closures or two-hour delays through its site, alerts and local radio. Keep a backup plan for delayed starts between December and March.
Are there boarding schools in northern Arizona?
No private college-preparatory boarding school; The Orme School near Mayer closed at the end of 2024-25. The BIE and tribal boarding schools on the Navajo Nation, such as Greyhills Academy High School in Tuba City, enroll separately. For the statewide list, see Boarding schools.
When does school start in Flagstaff?
Monday, August 10, 2026 for Flagstaff Unified, on the calendar its board approved in January 2026; Prescott Unified started Thursday, August 6. Other districts publish their dates on their calendar pages.
We are moving to Tuba City, Kayenta or Chinle. How do we enroll?
Through the public district for the town, exactly as anywhere else in Arizona: Tuba City Unified, Kayenta Unified and Chinle Unified each have a registration page or office linked in the tribal-lands table above. If you are considering a Bureau of Indian Education or tribally controlled grant school instead, such as Greyhills Academy High School, contact that school directly; those schools enroll on their own terms, not through the district.
